District of Columbia Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency to Participate in 2014 NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo

(Washington, DC) – Join the District of Columbia’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (DC HSEMA) at the 21st NBC4 Health and Wellness Fitness Expo on January 11th and 12th at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The 2014 NBC4 Health & Fitness Expo is the largest, best-attended, free consumer health event in the country, with close to 200 exhibitors and 87,000+ attendees! Kick off the New Year in a fun and healthy way with information and activities designed to help you Get Healthy 4 Life!

Emergencies and disasters can happen anywhere and anytime.  The confusion immediately following a disaster is scary – especially if you have not prepared in advance and have not discussed these ideas with your friends and family.  Any major disaster will temporarily overwhelm First Responders.  Therefore, DC HSEMA, along with our national partners at the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, recommend persons try to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours following a disaster.

DC HSEMA Director, Chris Geldart says, “For the past 15 years DC HSEMA has participated in this phenomenal event.  This health and fitness expo is a perfect opportunity for our staff to engage thousands of people from across the region in conversations about the importance of being aware, being prepared, and having an emergency plan.”

Please come and visit our booth located in the Safe and Security Pavilion, which is located in Exhibit Halls B and C, Booth S-3, to learn how you, your family and your community can be better prepared before a disaster strikes!  This year when you visit the HSEMA booth, you will have an opportunity to:

  • Register for Alert DC, the District’s premier text notification alert system.  Alert DC is your FREE personal connection to real-time updates and instructions on evacuation routes and shelter information, preparedness and protection measures.  This notification system is available to residents, commuters and tourists.  When an incident or emergency occurs, authorized HSEMA personnel can rapidly notify you using this community alert system.
  • Download the “DC HSEMA” must-have emergency preparedness app for iPhone, Android, and tablets, which give you the ability to access potentially life-saving information from the palm of your hand.  With this FREE App, you can check for road closures, learn what to do during any of the 18 most common hazards in the region, access DC evacuation routes, receive the latest weather updates, locate the nearest police/fire station and much, much more!
  • Receive lots of emergency preparedness information and resources you can use to GET INFORMED, MAKE A PLAN, AND BE PREPARED.
