Mayor Bowser Addresses District Preparation for MLB All-Star Game Festivities

Tuesday, July 10, 2018
MLB All-Star Game Returns to the Sports Capital for the First Time in Nearly 50 Years

(WASHINGTON, DC) –Mayor Muriel Bowser today hosted a press conference on the District’s preparation for the MLB All-Star Game festivities, including the All-Star Fan Fests at the Walter Washington Convention Center, the All-Star events at the Nationals Park complex, and the 2018 MLB All-Star Color Run 5K.

“It’s a big summer for sports fans in Washington, DC. As always, throughout the All-Star Week festivities, our goal is to ensure the safety of residents and visitors,” said Mayor Bowser. “From a successful Stanley Cup Final and victory parade to the recent opening of Audi Field to the 89th MLB All Star Game, this summer is all about demonstrating the passion and excitement that makes Washington, DC the sports capital. Let’s stay safe, have fun, and play ball!”

To keep the public informed during All-Star week, the Bowser Administration launched sportscapital.dc.gov, the official home for residents and visitors to stay up to date on weather, parking restrictions, accessible transit options, stadium special event zone permits, and city services. The Metropolitan Police Department will also increase onsite staffing and coordinate with the District Department of Transportation and federal partners to ensure safety across the District.

“DC is host to multiple large scale events on an annual basis,” said Chief of Police, Peter Newsham. “The Metropolitan Police Department is prepared to facilitate a safe and memorable All-Star week for all those participating.”

“DDOT has mobilized across the agency to meet Mayor Bowser’s goal to keep visitors safe and our transportation network moving for all of the events during All Star Week," said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. "Visitors will be directed by thousands of new wayfinding signs, and supported by 300 staff members, all committed to making this All Star week truly memorable."

Ensuring effective communication across the District, the Bowser Administration will activate HSEMA’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and Joint Information Center (JIC) on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. in support of MLB planned activities and events. Residents and visitors will be able to receive important and emergency information from HSEMA by texting “DCSports” to 888-777. Anyone experiencing an emergency should call 911, and residents seeking non-emergency city services should continue to call 311.
