(Washington, DC) – Today, as National Preparedness Month kicks off across the country, the Bowser Administration has officially proclaimed September as “DC Preparedness Month.” All month long, the District of Columbia Homeland Security Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) is encouraging residents, businesses, and visitors to take proactive steps to prepare for potential emergencies and disasters, and is providing communities with resources on how to stay prepared for any situation.
“Preparedness is the foundation of our work at HSEMA, and we know that when communities, businesses, and families prepare for emergencies ahead of time, the risk to safety and property is significantly reduced,” said HSEMA Director Clint Osborn. “Whether it's a natural disaster, a public health emergency, or any other unexpected event, being and staying prepared means we can better look out for our neighbors and our city.”
The proclamation aligns with the annual National Preparedness Month campaign led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and serves as a call to action for all Washingtonians. The 2025 National Preparedness Month theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” is focused on getting back to the essentials of preparedness. As the Atlantic hurricane season remains active through the end of November, National Preparedness Month is an ideal time for families and communities to prepare for extreme weather.
Throughout DC Preparedness Month, HSEMA and other District government agencies will host events and provide digital resources to help residents get started or update their preparedness plans.
Residents are encouraged to take the following steps towards preparedness:
- Be Aware: Understand the potential hazards and threats that may impact the District by visiting ready.dc.gov.
- Make a Plan: Create a household emergency plan that includes communication strategies and evacuation routes.
- Build a Kit: Assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit.
- Stay Informed: Sign up for free emergency alerts from District officials at alert.dc.gov.
