Bowser Administration Strengthens Resiliency of Local Businesses with Free Disaster Insurance and Preparedness Seminar

Thursday, October 4, 2018

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Monday, October 15, at 4:00 p.m., the Bowser Administration, led by the DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) and the District’s Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB), will offer a free disaster insurance and preparedness seminar to strengthen the resiliency and disaster preparedness efforts of District businesses.

Whether it’s flooding, fire, or cyber-attacks, District businesses are vulnerable to a variety of hazards which can strike at any moment. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), 40 percent of businesses never recover after a disaster and 62 percent of business owners do not have an emergency plan in place. This free seminar provides businesses with information and resources to be better prepared for disasters, understand the types of insurance coverages available, understand which insurance coverage is best, and navigate the insurance claims process after a disaster.

Disaster Insurance and Preparedness Seminar will take place at 2720 Martin Luther King Avenue, SE. Registration for the seminar is now open at and pre-registration ends on Friday, October 12.

“Thousands of small businesses provide key goods and services to residents across the District,” said HSEMA Director Dr. Chris Rodriguez. “It’s critical when a disaster strikes, big or small, that businesses have the necessary plans in place to reopen as soon as possible. By focusing on preparedness, we’re building the resilience needed to minimize the devastation and ensure our neighborhoods can recover quickly.”

“The Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking is pleased to host this seminar in partnership with HSEMA,” noted DISB Commissioner Stephen Taylor. “We are committed to helping District residents and small business owners prepare for disasters and recover as quickly as possible. Having the right kind of insurance is an important part of the equation.”

This seminar is part of the District’s ReadyDC efforts which encourages residents to stay informed, be aware, make a plan, and build a kit. For more information on ReadyDC, visit
